What is RSS?
About RSS Feeds
RSS is a common term used in the blogging world, and it stands for Really Simple Syndication. OK, thanks for the techno-jargon, but why is RSS important to me, you ask yourself? Well, it's easy to visit and enjoy a favorite blog or two, but what if you soon have 87 favorite blogs? Imagine how much time you'd waste looking up each one every day, especially if there aren't any new posts! This is where RSS comes in. A blog that has an RSS feed allows it's contents to be accessed by you without having to visit to the blog directly, but in order to see the information you have to SUBSCRIBE to the feed of that blog. RSS feeds are usually indicated by an orange RSS button, or alternatively by the logo of a particular RSS FEED READER.
What is an RSS Reader?
In order to receive updates via an RSS feed, you need to have an RSS Feed Reader (or Aggregator, as it is also called). The RSS Reader is an application used to check your list of RSS feed subscriptions and to deliver updates right to your desktop. In short, a feed reader is an online application, stand alone or web based, that reads and manages content delivered in RSS feeds. Some popular feed readers are Google Reader, Netvibes, Bloglines, NewsGator Online, My Yahoo, and Rojo.
Ready to Subscribe?
What feed reader should you choose? Well, they'll all get the job done, but it is often convenient to choose a reader that is associated with your email providor (e.g., Google Reader or My Yahoo), because you may not have to sign up for a separate account. Once you have signed up for (or verified that your email providor includes) an RSS feed reader, you are ready to start building your list of subscriptions. You can subscribe to the Vegan Bride blog by clicking on the subscribe button in the left sidebar, and choosing your reader from the list. You will be automatically taken to your reader to manage your new RSS feed subscription.
One Final Note
While feed readers provide the convenience of having your favorite blog posts all in one convenient location, you do give up part of the experience in exchange for that convenience. Feed readers do not allow you to comment on blog entries that you found interesting, so don't forget to stop by Vegan Bride from time to time to leave us your comments!
