WE’RE BAAAAAACK!!!

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

We landed at 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time this morning. Flying is always so surreal…last night I was on an island in the middle of the Pacific, now I’m back home & STILL contending with a living room filled w/fallout & junk from the wedding! (We obviously did something wrong:).

Hawaii was really fantastic. There were some bumps & bruises along the way (driving 3 + hours roundtrip to the other side of Maui for a zipline adventure, asking for directions from the crew but getting lost along the way, but assured that arriving late was “ok”, only to be turned away once we got there…:( —- Flying “Go” airlines between Oahu & Maui & finding out at the airport we HAD to check our carry ons to the tune of $10 or $15 each because their overhead compartments are TINY, grossly undersized compared to any full-size plane I’d ever written. When I rec’d my turquoise & pink polka dotted carry on at the other end, of course it was brown & black & thrashed. Grrrr. Fly Hawaiian. Tickets were the EXACT same price & they compartments that can actually fit your purse!!

Other than those few hiccups, it was absolutely spectacular & I’m actually a little bummed to be back home (which never happens)!!! Usually, one of the benefits of living in Southern California is that no matter where in the world I go, I’m always happy to come back home to the sun, the affordable organic produce (compared to EVERYWHERE else I’ve traveled), the comforts of one’s own home, the stadium seats at the movie theater, you know, the creature comforts of big city but sorta suburban life. However this time for whatever reason, I wasn’t quite ready to leave beautiful Hawaii,  so I’m suffering ever-so-slightly from the post-vacation blues. Flying in on the red eye & getting no sleep, also means I’m tired & things are hazy so I probably should “take it down” for a few & then spoil you w/the juicy details & photos (btw, woe is us, we didn’t take that many)! We were always worried about having a camera or cell phone on a boat excursion, near the beach etc. PLUS my hair do was definitely a “hair don’t” the whole vacation!! My leftover extensions from the wedding were struggling at this point! However I had no time to get the furry thing removed before we darted off…soo, to say the least, I WAS a little camera shy & Halloween-looking the whole time, plus utterly ill-prepared for traversing rugged terrain & having trusty camera in tow. But I digress. There’s lots to share. There are wedding photos & video we’re still waiting on that hopefully we’ll have SOON as well. I promise for some good updates! Miss you all & love!! :) VB

DON’T HATE US CUZ’ WE’RE OFF TO HAWAII!…:)

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Well, after weeks of washing 750+ moldy dishes, lugging heavy trees (yes, full-on trees & other wedding effects have COVERED our living room like a real-life Sanford & Son) & working around the clock, WE NEED A VACATION/HONEYMOON! So, what’s a wedding sticker-shocked bargain-hunting vegan bride to do?? Well, w/some crafty pre-planning & a little bit of blessings & luck thrown in, I devised  a plan to have a “dream vacation” on a dollar budget. To be more specific, we fetched accommodations for 9 nights including roundtrip airfare for us BOTH nonstop to Oahu & from Maui for about 225 dollars!- (also INCLUDING the ugly $75 fee for using our miles w/less than a 21 day advance!) I asked vegan groom to stealthily charge every conceivable  business & personal expense on miles & points cards for the past few months (that got us our airfare). I then dug up a timeshare “preview week” on Maui I’d purchased a few years back that was lost because it had EXPIRED. I called… begged, pleaded & offered the farm (well, more like 2 hours of our lives to sit through a time-share presentation while on vacation). Hey, we can suffer a high-pressure sales pitch in the name of a 7 night beach front one bedroom luxury suite on Maui!! We also wanted to see Oahu w/Honolulu & Waikiki beach, so we found inexpensive lodging for 2 nights, (About $55 a night + tax for a decent hotel!) We’re staying w/VeganGroom’s brother for 1 night…all totaling 10 days, 9 nights, Oahu & Maui for  $225 room & airfare. (Did my best to get good rental rates on cars too, there’s also the inter-island flight we purchased at $55 ea. including fees, as well…I’ll blog about that perhaps soon as well, but off to the airport now!). Hopefully we have some FABULOUS adventures ahead of us…snorkeling, zip lining, & a true luxury we’ve missed out on for months & months, some SLEEP!! Promise to keep you posted! Love ya! :) C

RECIPE FROM OPRAH’S FAVORITE VEGAN CHEF!!

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I was over the moon when Oprah announced on her list of “favorite things” last week – (an INSTANT fame-maker for any product or service who’s on there)…a VEGAN CHEF as one of her favorites!! Anyone who knows me well or has talked to me for more than 5 minutes knows that many of my views are a result of my world/”The world according to Oprah”. I’m a fan of Gary Zucav (Seat of the Soul) & Carolyn Myss (Anatomy of the Spirit) as a result of seeing them on Oprah. I have a greater love of & exposure to Maya Angelou because of Oprah. I keep a gratitude journal (ok, or at least I always intend to) because of Oprah. I EVEN insist that everyone not wear shoes in our house because, you guessed it… (well, I was doing this already but seeing it  on Oprah, mentioned as a health risk due to germs & pathogens) lent greater credence to the idea! Oprah Oprah Oprah. (Woe is VeganGroom, because he married an Oprah obsessor) but be that as it may…I’m sure you can imagine my joy, when “Oprah the Great” was exposed to a vegan 21 day detox last year & when she sang the praises of a vegan chef last week. I’ve been waiting 20 + years for the moment darn it, let’s savor it!!

Also, I would find myself totally remiss if I did not share a key vegan recipe she raved about with you, on the off chance you DIDN’T or don’t watch Oprah (gasp), or let’s just hope, you didn’t have tivo or a pen handy. Here it ’tis :)

Celery Root Soup with Granny Smith Apples
Recipe from The Conscious Cook by Tal Ronnen
Tal Ronnen's Celery Root Soup

Photo: Linda Long
Says Tal:
This is the most popular soup I make—people go crazy for it. I first made it for a supper club I started at my friend Ko’s jazz place in L.A. Throwing in some diced apple at the end adds a surprise tartness, and dots of chive oil give it a sleek, dramatic finish.
Ingredients:
Serves 6
  • Sea salt
  • 3 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 medium celery roots , peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 stalks celery , chopped
  • 1 large onion , chopped
  • 2 quarts faux chicken or vegetable broth (try Better than Bouillon brand)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cup thick Cashew Cream
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 unpeeled Granny Smith apple , very finely diced
  • Chive oil

Place a large stockpot over medium heat. Sprinkle the bottom with a pinch of salt and heat for 1 minute. Add the oil and heat for 30 seconds, being careful not to let it smoke. This will create a nonstick effect.

Add the celery root, celery, and onion and sauté for 6 to 10 minutes, stirring often, until soft but not brown. Add the stock and bay leaf, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Add the Cashew Cream and simmer for an additional 10 minutes.

Working in batches, pour the soup into a blender, cover the lid with a towel (the hot liquid tends to erupt), and blend on high. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle into bowls. Place a spoonful of the diced apple in the center of each serving, drizzle the Chive Oil around the apple, and serve.

For the chive oil: http://www.oprah.com/recipe/food/recipessauces/20091015-tows-tal-ronnen-chive-oil

I haven’t had a chance to whip up this recipe YET, as I’m still buried in wedding recovery (ug!) & honeymoon preparation mode (yay!) With the holidays coming up, I’m sure we’ll find it on our table soon. If you do try it, please let me know what you think!!!  Love ya. :)

SINGER PINK SPEAKS OUT AGAINST AUSTRALIAN WOOL…

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I’m so happy to find this video, thanks Girlie Girl & PETA! Recently, while shopping for things to spruce up the house for a wedding, I went to a rug shop looking for flokatis. They didn’t have the color in stock I was looking for, so the salesman tried to convince me that the sheepskin rug they had in stock was actually GOOD FOR the sheep it came from…as the sheep are in need of being sheered, & he was sure they were handled completely humanely. I have to look that guy up & send him this video. I’m sure many people think along the same lines. However unless you’ve personally seen the way the animals are housed, treated, sheared etc., you probably can’t say & probably CAN bet that it is not as popular, or profitable to be humane, as is “claimed”. Ok, fill you in on more wedding updates in a few. For now, just wanted to share this. W/love, The Girl Vegan… :) C

WE MADE IT THROUGH!!! (NOW WE NEED TO SLEEP FOR A WEEK)…

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

But first, quick thanks, some sleep, then back for more of an update, I promise!!

Whew, to properly recover, I think we need to sleep for at least TWO WEEKS, but before I lay my head down, quick, special special thanks to:
Toki Cavener Photographer – (www.tokisphotos.com) -This vegan hipster lady has vision, panache, talent, willingness to hop on a plane to get it done AND she’s even super NICE y’all. Thanks Toki!! Can’t wait to see the photos & the amazing photo book & thank you cards!
Phil Birdsell Wedding DJ – (www.philbirdsell.com) This man loves what he does & it SHOWS! Can’t get Chuck Woolery for your event? Hire Phil! They look like brothers, have the same charm factor, but Phil EVEN broke out into a full on Michael Jackson dance that had the crowd roaring (I joke to you not). Though we got him our OBSCURE old-school hip hop, disco & r & b classic request list that everyone but your mamma had forgotten about…he worked it out, last-minute, & made the music a HIT! Thank you Phil!!!
Nikola Ahaiwe Of Platinum Touch Events (who we drove completely nuts) & her 3 AMAZING assistants, Sagevee (sp?) (so sweet & helpful)! Jackie, (helped me so much upon upon “hello”, super nice nice & just the calming touch that every bride needs)  & Vanessa (extremely professional also & on it on it on it!!) Thank you all so much for going above & beyond!!:)
May Lindstrom of Green Blossom Beauty - (www.GreenBlossomBeauty.com) – Oh May, who held my dress while I peed, talked me off the ledge when I was worried I’d left my written vows, (which themselves, hadn’t even been completed) & lastly, re-glued my Tyra-esque gigantic eyelashes on, again & again all day through the tears. Thank you thank you thank you so much! A complete vegetarian beauty in her own right, check her out as she is the only TRULY GREEN makeup artist in the free world we know of (her kit being totally non-toxic, sans the eyelash glue which we crazed brides are intent on having). Also special thanks to her team-member “Christopher” who flawlessly did my hair! Please send me over your url as well, if you have one! :) Thx so much!

Vanessa of VanessaBellyDance.com- She THRILLED our guests with her unexpected sword dance & danced her way into our hearts forever! Her co-dancer was fantastic & awe-inspiring as well! The SWEETEST woman with the best dance company ever-check her out NOW!         (There are more thanks to other vendors to come, this is just round one).
FRIENDS whom the day could NOT have been “pulled off” without:
Melanie Edwards & Steven Edwards- Our own personal heroes, who stepped in & saved the day when our caterer ambushed us, we had no location for the wedding brunch, & when we needed to believe there was still some good & righteousness in the world! We love you endlessly! Thank you!!! :)

Bishop Everitt: My friend Evan (who gets married this weekend, hopefully not amidst all the stress & chaos we went through) left a message o my voice mail yesterday proclaiming “The highlight of the entire event was when the Bishop so humorously portrayed your story”. Wow, the Bishop MADE the highlight! No words can express how grateful we are to him.

My dear, relentless & beautiful friend Sugania Nivalapan -OHMYGOODNESS. I wore Sue’s jewelry, I carried her clutch, her vases, bowls & decorations my house is STILL adorned with. Sue was part of the crazy team who stayed up until 3 IN THE MORNING the night before, washing, counting & boxing 1,000 + dishes, glasses, cups, plates, decorations, etc. Not to mention Sue’s running ALL OVER downtown, even the MORNING OF to find a petticoat, & previously, gold chargers, square plates, tablecloths, ribbon, you name it. My heroine! ( Full posting on all the specifics from everyone coming soon!)

Vanessa Araiza- Not only did she dance w/Sue, Josh & I during our “surprise number” (video soon to come!) She ran & picked up BOWLS for chimichurri sauce the morning of! She’s the best friend every girl wishes she could have! :)

Josh’s family- Dad, Brent, Reagan, Melanie, even little Hayden!! Thank you so MUCH for staying up all night to help, delivering tables & chairs for the brunch, washing 1,000 dishes, & all of your love & support! Goodness Gracious did we not know what we were getting into, huh!?? Thank you so much!! :)

Mommy: You sent checks every week & love everyday. Thank you SO MUCH!! We love you!!

Special Last-Minute, unexpected Thanks!:
Paige of Mabrials’ Bridal- (http://www.mabrialsbridal.com) SAVED THE DAY!! Rather than me surf the net ENDLESSLY for weeks at a time, finding the dress of my dreams, more search for a seamstress who could pull it off, receiving the dress months later & months late, only to discover it looked NOTHING like the original & couldn’t be worn, left in a complete tizzy & THEN finding Paige…I only WISH I could have happened upon her bridal shop sooner, spent a 1/2 an hour looking around & then have had Paige (the kindest woman in the world) ship me the dress SHE suggested for me, which was completely beautiful & a fraction of the cost of couture dresses at typical bridal boutiques, the end. More on the dress drama & also Paige’s beautiful designer gowns at fantastic discount prices later…for now, COMPLETE THANKS!!
Bob of BartenderswithSpirit.com- WHAT impeccable service they provided!! He too helped us last minute, doubled our staff on 12 hours notice, took care of EVERYTHING service related, (we didn’t have to buy a single jar of juice, for the reception, or even a cup) & he & his staff did it all w/a smile. We paid them full price for everything (gulp) but the service was SO GOOD, they were so well-dressed, professional, attractive & on top of things, & LESS EXPENSIVE THAN MOST, WITH M-O-R-E service (i.e. they SET UP & BROKE DOWN for us…whereas some other service staff vendors only serve) so we were just in awe of how good they were! Call them on the jiffy!

Thanks so much to all of our friends & family members who hopped planes, trains & automobiles & broke the bank to be with us! There are so many cards & so much love, we haven’t even gone through them all yet! Thank you thank you THANK YOU! Ok, I promise to have the FULL SCOOP very soon…for now, I leave you with part 1) of the dress debacle. Here’s the “To Die For” Pronovias dress I originally found & commissioned:

THE Wedding Dress of My Dreams...

THE Wedding Dress of My Dreams...Courtesy of www.Pronovias.com

Here is the dress that was delivered: (I call it “The dress that Couldn’t”) Once we’d reached a week before the wedding weekend & two months behind the LAST DAY of the dress mock up promise date, I gave up, but here it ’tis:

Delivered dress. Me, no makeup, trying to hold in the tears/stress. It was "poofy-er" in the midsection than this, but I gathered in the sides (that are 4 x's larger than my waiste) because she asked me to - it is also pinned in about 20-25 places to hold down the "ruffles" because I asked her to)...

Dress 10/2/09. Me, no makeup, trying to hold in the tears/stress. It was "poofy-er" in the midsection but I gathered in the sides (that are huge in comparison to my waist/original dress) because she asked me to - it is also pinned DOWN in about 25-30 places to tame the "ruffles" because I asked her to)...There was also a bow, but it had fallen off...

A lot of stress, & this is just the beginning.

Hopefully once we post some VIDEO from the day however, the ACTUAL dress, descriptions of the FOOD & the video of our surprise dance number, there will be some smiles. Love you all, now off for some SLEEP!! :) C

THE SAGA CONTINUES…OUR CEREMONY CATERER HAS FLAKED!! :(

Friday, October 9th, 2009

So as if planning a wedding in 4 months time on no budget (mind you, anything less than 30k in California is “no budget”!!!!) with no wedding dress (yet) & all the lunacy & gymnastics that go into any stressful-large scaled event weren’t enough…on top of EVERYTHING ELSE, our caterer for our after ceremony “elixir soiree” has just flown the coup!!!

Yes, you read right. She became all unglued when she learned that the ceremony venue, in BH, requires her to have a City of Beverly Hills Business license. (From what I have learned, this is PAR FOR THE COURSE for every event professional who works in Bev Hills, costs $91 & is good for a year. Apparently, she told VeganGroom at the venue walk-through that we should pay for her business license! When he requested that she look further into it to see if it was solely for a one-time use, or a general benefit for her company, she came back w/the concern (irrational) that doing our event & getting the BH business license would cause her to have to pay approx. $1,000 in taxes, which “wasn’t worth it” for an event where she’d be making “so little”. (Mind you, she claimed to be “charging us rock bottom rates” but was, in actuality charging VERY INFLATED rates for the amount & quality of food we were talking… (much of it looked microwaved, I’ll post pics soon…however we were overwhelmed, had not much time & were desperate) 4 small appetizers, 2 fruit drinks, small tray of fruit & water, for 75 people, totaling nearly $1,000 w/all said & done. As an aside….whoever heard of paying $1,000 in taxes for an event where you didn’t even make $1,000 BEFORE expenses?..hmmm, shady macgrady sounding if you ask me…)

However the larger problem, besides the sheer lunacy of not being prepared to have a business license for the city you’re working in & refusing to do a job for “fear of taxes”…is leaving a bride & groom HANGING – 4 days before the event, 2 tastings & 1,000 phone calls & emails later (though she has ceased to return our calls & completely stood us up for the last tasting)! :( …Her most email included an attempt that we see as nothing less than extortion, in the form of “I will not do your event for less than $500 added to the agreed upon amount”.

However her flakiness & total disregard for the stress this puts us under speakes greater volume, than even trying to squeeze an extra $500 out for no more food, & much lesser service! How could we trust such an individual to even show up the day of?!

Woe is me…if anyone knows of any slammin’ vegan-friendly caterers who can whip up some appetizers & non-alcoholic drinks in 3 days, please let us know on the jiffy!!!!!!

LESS THAN 2 WEEKS…PLEASE, SOMEONE? MY KINGDOM 4 SOME SANITY!!!

I know the feeling!... :) Courtesy of dogsounds.files.wordpress.com

I know the feeling!... :) Courtesy of dogsounds.files.wordpress.com

Arghhhhhhhh!!! I called my mother today in tears. I begged, I pleaded, I championed for some possible way we could call this wedding thing off!!??? Maybe we could just pay everyone’s change fees for their wasted airline tickets…(the total of which might be less even ONE of our locations!) Perhaps we could do a veggie bar b q in somebody’s backyard, & call it a day? Maybe we could move to Tibet, take up the cause of the exiled & have people forget we ever imagined this fiasco of an event & just Kumbaya us w/love or something?

No matter what the clever out I envisioned, my mother remained steadfast that now, 1.5 weeks before the big day, we COULD NOT CANCEL the event. Bummer. I almost saw freedom… right around the corner.

Because it has been more than 4 months since I’ve gone to a movie, had a social life, watched a television show, gone out for a leisurely stroll, talked on the phone just to say hello to someone or partook of anything that might be perceived as part of a “normal existence”, I wanted so badly to walk away, take my life (& my savings) back & go see Inglorious Bastards or something. But no, I’m committed. I must go down with this ship.

The latest & not so greatest:

The tour bus we hired to shuttle our guests from the hotel to “The Boarding School/Prison Camp” (i.e. the ceremony location that is oh so beautiful, but might be called “PUT A DAMPER ON YOUR  WEDDING HOPES ALLEY/RULES CENTRAL”)…anyway we hired a bus (as to be more eco-friendly AND to make things easier for our guests). This bus, we just learned today, possibly CAN’T SAFELY MAKE IT UP THE HILL TO “RULES CENTRAL”, as it seats 61 passengers, is L-O-N-G, & might get caught on the ground or something & have to be towed away in the event. Really. Our options: hire a SECOND PAID BUS to bring guests a 1 minute drive up the driveway, (take a bottle of pills) hire a limo service or taxi or???? Yes Goodness.

A tad more than a week before the big event, my dress (promised to be delivered in August) IS STILL NOT FINISHED!!!

We found out, despite having to pay a hefty fee for a “fire permit” so we can do a wild & crazy thing like, “light candles at our reception”, the TYPE of candles we already invested in are a no-go. (They are not unique, or exotic or vulgarly dancing candles or anything). Luckily, after a brief nervous breakdown on my part, it appears this issue CAN be resolved. Pay the hefty fee, cry a little, get on your knees & pray & perhaps they’ll work with you.

Challenges w/decor. Need I say more?

Still don’t have our wedding dance down. Like. At. All.

Emotional difficulties this week…& not to put a complete & total damper on things within this week’s rant/venting hour, but I’d like to share that VeganGroom’s mother got rushed to the hospital this week for emergency surgery. She’s still in the hospital (please pray for her if you believe in prayer).  Looks as though she won’t be able to make it to our wedding ceremony. :( :(

The sweetest sweetest sweetest kindest woman from my church (did I say sweet?) had some HORRIBLE news this past Sunday that I’m still reeling from…

I think I’m all the more emotionally raw than usual because the stakes are so high & the margin of error so low.

These be tumultuous times for a bride to be! If it’s not getting ripped off from a would be vendor who makes a living from unsuspecting/desperate brides who are too tired, stressed, anxious, unaware & busy to scoff at that 500% mark up (rant on this later)… it’s madness in the world, or madness from within from trying to live up to so many impossible expectations. The director of a documentary on marriage we’re taking part in (more on this to come, as well) informed me that the most used word in any bridal magazine is the word “perfect”. “Perfect day,  “perfect dress” in a perfect setting, within a “perfect” world. I’m beginning to re-think it all, & dare to focus on (gasp) just enjoying the time for what it’s worth.

My mother has been able to remain calm amidst the storm & talked me off the bridal madness ledge. For that I am grateful.

And of course for you. And for Him.

And for HIM.

Goodnight. :) C

TOKI THE GREAT!

Oh family…

The gods of good tidings, love, & all things beautiful have smiled upon us! I randomly ran into Toki’s work a few months back while searching for a wedding photographer. I instantly found her images to be emotional, timeless, and definitely captivating, so I was excited to see if she’d lend her talents to our big day. When I contacted her though, I had no idea that she’s also an incredibly giving artist, a passionate eco-friendly purveyor/designer/cook/gardener, AND (drumroll please) she’s VEGAN!  (Can you believe it!?) Toki lives on a small farm in Oregon, travels WORLDWIDE to shoot events and of course, is a true find in this age of consciousness-free consumerism & “imitation art” – in the name of profit, soo often found within the wedding industry.

We were already “over the moon” to have her on board. However “VeganGroom” just got off the phone with her & learned that Toki has a host of above and beyond ideas that are going to add so much dimension & unexpected joy to our occasion! We can’t wait to share our own wedding photos with you as taken by the goddess Toki, :) but for now, feast on these beauties:

LESS THAN 5 WEEKS TO GO & THE PRESSURE MOUNTS…

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Hello beloveds! There have been so many things that I danced through my mind this week that I’ve been meaning to write about. Amidst the utter chaos that is my last-minute budget-friendly animal-conscious affair preparation, I wanted to take a moment to express a small, but painful truth: I’M OVERWHELMED & A BIT SCARED! There, I did it! Wow. Realizing the amount of things still left to do with less than 5 weeks until the day (choreograph a wedding dance, hire a bus. co., design the ceremony schedule, find the favors, make the pomanders, find the vegan wedding shoes, design a video, locate a caterer for the 1st part of our event, design place cards, wedding programs… to name a few!) makes it all seem quite a daunting task!! How does anyone in their right mind get out w/their sanity in tact!??? :)

Thank goodness for the wedding planner we just connected with (more on her soon)!

Thank goodness for the absolute angels who have offered to help (giving them a shout out soon as well)!

Thank goodness for my mother doing thoughtful/selfless things constantly, (she’s 3,000 miles away!) :( However, little things, like her sending us an envelope full of stamps has meant so much. (I think it fitting to mention a “small” thing, but just know that she has truly stretched herself, w/very much on her plate) even & including health challenges (no, she’s not vegan :) ).

Thank goodness for all of the help!

However this evening, as I lay myself down to sleep, I am numb w/CONCERN. I’ll be back tomorrow w/some encouraging tidbits about a color scheme, an interesting trend, an irresistible food item, or a party planning topic or two, but tonight I just wanted to express a bit of anxiety so hopefully, by tomorrow, it will dissipate & I’ll be back in the land of rational planning &  calm but steady progress. Goodnight. :) C
