WEDDING DECOR I DON’T ABHOR…

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

So many decisions. Flowers, colors, themes, favors, place cards, menus, invitations, aisle runners, lighting, centerpieces… just to name a few! “Turquoise-y” blue has been my favorite color for quite some time. So, as to have at least somewhat of a starting point, let’s consider decor for “the blue (Tiffany/turquoise/aqua blue) & brown dream wedding”. Hopefully this post will provide some inspiration for divas looking for a fab color-combo, while I try to figure out what sticks for us, as well. :

SAY HELLO TO DRESS DEALS!

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Ok, so I was preparing to write my next post about wedding color schemes, when I happened upon this “super sale” info I thought was too good not to pass on. I’m a girl who love love loves a bargain. Therefore, the wedding industry makes my brain short circuit “on the daily”, as it is chock full of some of the most inflated prices on EVERYTHING I’ve ever seen! Finding impossibly cheap prices amongst these muddy waters is a welcome blessing, no?!! Well, behold. Bridesmaids dresses for under a $20 that don’t look like something the cat drug in!? There IS true love in the universe. What thinks ye????

WE HAVE A WINNER! (S)

Monday, July 27th, 2009
Beauty Pie, (throw-back from one of our dinners)!

Beauty Pie, (throw-back from one of our early dinners)!

Yes folks, we have a winner, & we also have a special surprise. My very single (& therefore very appreciative of “lady luck”) charming, sweet ole business partner Craig, suggested we select not only a first place winner, but also a second place winner as a surprise!!! (Did Craig jinx the dear, sweet men-folk who entered)? Me hopes not! If his “vibes” of spoiling women (he’s always giving out free samples on his route, he’s nothing short of a big flirt) in any way affected the outcome I worked hard to make a random, I certainly do not want the bad-karma gods looking at me! I was fastidious about keeping the competition as fair as possible, as I know many of the Blog readers personally (NOT that most of my friends entered comments for the giveaway at all, you know who you are!! Gripes coming later:)…but anyway…so Craig was feeling generous, and thought we should start the new blog off w/a blast by choosing 2 winners, not just one! Each person was assigned a number in order of when they posted. Multiple posts, equaled multiple numbers (i.e. twitter +1, facebook etc.). Then we used a randomized computer program to select a number (name) and voila! The 1st place winner is:

KELLIE from California!!

Remember Ms. Thang? She had loads of great ideas, from using Palm Leaf disposable dinnerware, to compostable garbage bags (DEFINITELY checking into this!, thank you) to potted plants as centerpieces…

That’s two hand-made vegan cheesecakes for you, dahling!!

A-N-D our second-place winner,….(drum roll)

MARIAN, also from the great state of Cali!

She suggested vegan Malaysian/Indian food served on Banana Leaves, evites vs. mailed invitations (I wish!) :( , recycled wedding fares found on Craigslist, ETC.!!

You win a pie!!

I will be emailing each of you idea geniuses directly to get the address where you would like to have the cakes shipped, instructions for using the shopping cart, the flavors available, etc. !!

Thank you ALL for participating so much! Thank you for your sweet, heart-felt ideas & kind wishes!! We will definitely keep you posted w/the progress (can you believe yes, I am STILL going through LOCATION FRUSTRATION, but that’s another post!) Love ya’…

WEDDING/SPECIAL OCCASION HAIR

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

So, I’ve been pondering amongst the 50,000 other considerations of all things wedding, what in the world to do with my hair the day of? I know that the updo is quite popular/traditional, but I’m hoping to “funk it out” a little bit with an elegant but still sassy “down do”, ala the trendsetting beauties shown below. I especially like Kate’s side-ponytail, however these all are some styles I’ve been pondering. What do you think? :

She's a cutie, and I hear-tell she's vegan

TONIGHT I CRIED…

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Tonight I spoke w/my friend Evan. He is planning a wedding this upcoming October as well, the weekend directly after ours. He & I exchanged our wedding-planning frustrations, with key emphasis on the unfathomable amounts of over-priced wedding effects. He threw out the amount of the location fee ALONE for his beach-hotel wedding, but mentioned that his fiance’s dream was only made possible due to the loving support of her family.

My heart sank. It shouldn’t have (necessarily) but it did.

I’m well aware that I am one blessed lady. I have a mother, amongst mothers. I have friends who I would take w/me throughout place and time. I’ve had a family full of innovative, colorful and unique characters. I have a sister who is as supportive as a protective lion. I have the cutest nephew in the world. Lastly, I have a significant other who God himself hand-picked for me. He is dashing, he is intelligent, he is fiercely loyal, he is spiritual, & most importantly, he gives his entire heart, soul and being to me. I am blessed. However I can’t help but feel the void of emptiness that swells in my heart when I reflect on my father’s staunch rejection of my wedding idea (due to the oh-so-shocking vegan menu). This translates to me feeling a direct renunciation of who I am at the very core.

Of course I’m sure he sees it (aloofly) differently. From his point of view, he offered to pay for the wedding, & only withdrew his support when he learned that I desired to have a celebration which would celebrate (my heart, my beliefs, my business, my lifestyle) my choice to serve a menu sans the meat.  Sounds fair, no? Especially from an old-school point of view.

However when one considers the “new-school”, when one considers the plight of the underdog (literal and figurative!) it seems to me unthinkable to not respect the deepest heartfelt desires of the couple celebrating the event. In fact, to put on a ceremony with elements in direct opposition to the bride (and groom’s) actual desires seems oddly in opposition to respecting who they are (or at least, in this case, who I am, since I’m the vegan) as a PERSON. Perhaps my view on this is what causes me to feel this personal undermine as a human being (and daughter), but this is how I feel. So tonight, I cried. I cried for myself, and I cried for every little girl who feels just short of her father’s validation. I cried for the recent deaths in the world, for the overpriced eco-friendly but not wallet friendly invitations. :) I cried for the closed minds that shut out progress. I cried for the mindset that causes us all to overspend, under think, forget to understand, but remember to under appreciate. I cried in a melodramatic, self-pitying, tired, sleep deprived, bridal kind of way. I then wrote these words to you, felt a little better, and proceeded to find these vegan shoes online for less than $40, (would these be cute for a rehearsal dinner or maybe even wedding shoe with the right dress, or??) and realized, that with cute cruelty-free shoes, a dose of Oprah, and maybe the right attitude, all could be right in the world again… :)

TODAY’S THE DAY…

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Ok family… After weeks of drudgery over trying to find THE location, I’ve decided it comes down to TODAY. I am on my way to see our LAST AND FINAL place & THEN I am going to force myself to stop the madness & make a decision! It’s come down to an indoor/outdoor historic location in Pasadena (not very close-by & not as “va va voom” perhaps as BH), & the one I’ve fallen in love with in BH with the “Old Hollywood feel” but with more restrictions than the Catholic boarding school I grew up in. I truly can’t imagine any location being able to knock the “boarding school” locale out of the box…but I’m actually hoping against hope that the “Pasadena underdog” will be so magnificent that I’ll have no choice but to skip “rules central” and go with a place that has indoor plumbing and no risk of sunburn. See, I’ve got my heart set on a beautiful setting such as this:

beautiful wedding decor

Courtesy of End Design

I didn’t say my wallet necessarilly has ITS heart set on this setting, but hopefully, there can be a compromise between the two. I mean really, don’t the candles & (manzanita?) trees make you think you’ve entered an enchanted forest!? Do I NEED an indoor location to create this kind of a feel????? Me thinks so. (Oh & there’s also that Drakonian no-candle mandate at the “boarding school” place -but darn, the locale is just so beautiful, it kind of makes you think there’s no choice but to sign up at the nunnery! ) What to do!?? Let’s hope option #2, all the way out in the Pasadena boondocks with shade and indoor plumbing is a keeper! (I’ll know better instantly upon viewing it). Maybe it will even come with tables, chairs & (hold your breath) dishes! Help wedding fairies, Help! :) Ok, it’s decision time…off to see the last & final contender…wish me luck!…

LOCATION FRUSTRATION!

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

LOCATION RANT…
Is it me? Maybe it’s me. (But) I feel the need to ask: “Is it UNCOMMONLY, IRRATIONALLY, RIDICULOUSLY HARD TO FIND A WEDDING VENUE THAT IS BEAUTIFUL, PRACTICAL, AVAILABLE, SPACIOUS, AFFORDABLE , (DOESN’T COST THE PRICE OF A YEAR’S WORTH OF GROCERIES PLUS SHOES NOT ON SALE!) and especially (drum roll) … WITH A STAFF WHO WILL ACTUALLY RETURN PHONE CALLS and EMAILS and is vegan-friendly?????? As I said, maybe it’s me!?  Ai yai yai, I feel like I’m searching for Al Capone or something. I’d LOVE to put the places on blast who have said “they’d get back by the end of the day/within a day/in a few days”… to answer a simple question like if they can cater a vegan menu or allow outside catering? Yet, WEEKS  have gone by and I have yet to receive a response back from them. (I’m feeling like a venue stalker!)  I’d love to blast them but since we’re all friends here and (your cousin’s uncle’s friend’s sister’s hairdresser might be the owner of one) suffice it to say ahem ahem, ok a hint: there’s a grand, historic venue in Long Beach, a science-related place downtown, a country club in the valley, and a studio in the heart of Hollywood, to name a FEW. Yes dear friends, wedding planning amidst unbelievably high-priced and unresponsive venues can be FRUSTRATING! On a positive note (and, as life would have it) my favorite favorite person to work with thus far happens to be connected to a venue we’ve decided against for the big bash. It’s called Fantasea Yachts (cute name no?). They are perched in the Marina del Rey section of Los Angeles. What I loved about them was the fact that they offer COMPLETE PACKAGES including food, tables, linens, FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS, planner, staff, and most impressively, they have this salesman named John Williams-Jacob who is seriously, to die for. He’s like something straight out of a wedding fairy-tale movie, where the bride commands nothing but the best. Ultra accommodating, smart, eagerly responsive (yes, I’m talking a real-live person in LA, people)!!! If only I could take him with me to whichever venue I ultimately torture myself into choosing…but I CAN’T, so he’ll still be there for you to grab! (Can you tell, I’m a little excited that someone was so nice to me AND was happy to make a full-on vegan accommodation!!) Though as I noted, torture myself I must, because all-in-one service would just be too easy. :( Oh no, I’m set on panoramic views, flower gardens and highly-restrictive regimes. For instance, the place I am most leaning towards, is a BEAUTIFUL outdoor venue in a GORGEOUS park-like setting. PROS:

Breath-taking Italian cypress tress, beautiful architecture (viewed externally), a balcony that overlooks the city, romantic fountains and the like.

Has an intriguing Hollywood-esque history that makes for a nice backdrop and storyline for our touristy guests. :)

BYOC (Bring your own catering)

Outdoor locale = less energy used = more eco-friendly

Did I say beautiful??

THE CONS:

Must be a daytime event. (Can daytime weddings have all the dancing and general frolicking of night-time ones?)

No candles allowed (Just shoot me.)

When all is said and done, expensive!

Outdoor locale..(what if it’s HOT, rains, cold, windy?…) We’re set for October, so HOPEFULLY the temps will be mild but…

EVERYTHING must be brought in in the form of rentals (every table, chair, fork, knife, napkin, carafe…this is where expensive can come into play).

So what to do?? The place I find to be the most beautiful, also has the most restrictions/additional considerations such as no on-site kitchen, rentals for everything, etc.

I can’t remember the last daytime wedding AND RECEPTION I’ve been to, so if anyone has ideas on how to make a daytime reception every bit as romantic as an evening candle-lit one filled with dancing until midnight, please let me know!!! (Will people even dance in the daytime???)

Ah, answers… hopefully soon to be found. This pic below, definitely makes you wanna’ fairy-tale swoon though, no? :)

BIDDING M.J. FAREWELL…

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009
michael-jackson

Michael Jackson Om

OK, so unlike the rest of creation, I’ve gotten to watch almost ZERO tv in the past 4 weeks or so, as I’ve been on plan-the-wedding overload . Therefore I haven’t been saturated by the media’s over-sensationalized hype of this tragic event. Say what you will (and I know that many things have been said). I DO WISH the media would include when they display that all-famous clip of him saying “what’s wrong w/sharing your bed?”…I wish they would include the REST OF THE CLIP, where he mentions he slept on the floor and offered this child/(…children in need) his bed. I’m a Libra and I definitely have an appreciation of the whole truth, and of always trying to keep a BALANCED approach to life and opinions).  Anyway, listening to Michael Jackson’s music and loving Michael Jackson was a huge part of my childhood. For that reason, he will always occupy a tender spot in my heart. I found the memorial yesterday be a touching, gut-wrenching, beautiful tribute. Too bad I find myself very sad still today. Rest in peace Michael, your music sparked a light of change, brilliance, and perfection that will never be blown out. Thank you for allowing me a moment to mourn.

With that, it’s back to all things wedding…

Love to all & peace. :) C

CATERING LOVE… ANYONE, ANYONE?!

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Wow, with the PLETHORA of vegan and raw food restaurants in Los Angeles, you’d think it would be fairly straightforward to find a bangin’ (bargain) vegan caterer for the controversial nuptials of the year. Think again. Whoever catered Ellen & Portia’s wedding is NOT knocking at my door! :( (In other words, I have no idea who they are & google’s not providing an answer to end this vegan plight).

The majority of the vegan restaurants in town are Thai or Chinese in their bent. While I love a good rice noodle or green curry, I  think I have my heart set on unexpected & very elegant vegan cuisine. I would also like to incorporate my all-time favorite style – “Italiano” – for the reception. I’ve scoured, skipped, and practically danced the jig in what feels like the search for the holy vegan grail, yet  still cater-less, I stand!!

Oh, the agony. There are obvious high-end restaurant choices, but the first obstacle is that I know they’re formidably expensive, (and when it comes to the expense, seriously – for couples who are spending $150+ a head, it kinda’ makes you think twice about including cousin Ed, no??) But I digress. Also, many restaurants I can easily find have specialties centered around imitation meat (which isn’t my personal fave). Apparently there are those who love large portions of “soy chycken”, “tofurky jerky” and the like. I think it’s fantastic if you avoid contributing to the suffering of animals by eating imitation meat and you find pleasure in it. However, for the rest of average creation, either (A) they are meat-eating because they like the taste of actual animal flesh, (B) are NOT meat-eating because they don’t like the taste of actual animal flesh (i.e. me)  (C) are not meat-eating because they don’t like the suffering of animals, (i.e. me) but also (D) find the texture of many imitation meats to be a little “off” (i.e. me), soooo having an entire meal based around it amidst a carnivore crowd, feels a little risky.  Again, I know there are vegan food aficionados who love imitation meat and even those who have found some mock meats to be almost indistinguishably close to the original, (send me some suggestions!) but I just think rolling it out for the wedding creates an unnecessary complication in an already avant garde setting. This added worry makes my search for the holy vegan grail all the more trepidatious! I mean who oh WHO will prepare tofu that can make even the burliest & most doubtful cavemen beat his chest? Who can come up with the creamiest vegan béchamel this side of the French Riviera? Really, can’t someone just hook me up with:

At least THIS part I can take care of! (Courtesy of EarthCafétoGo.com)

At least THIS part I can take care of! (Courtesy of EarthCafétoGo.com)

You know what trips me out? I’ve heard of hundreds of weddings where, despite the obscene amount of money spent (enough in some cases to support a small country) the food was totally wack! The chicken dry, the seafood – odd-tasting, the filet mignon filet min-wrong, BUT, let a potato chip at a vegan wedding have too much salt, and the whole concept, as far as the mainstream is concerned, will go down in flames. I feel as though with this one, (at least to those I know) I carry the weight of the entire vegan world on my little (out of shape) shoulders. Surely this is not the time for world-class vegan-friendly caterers to be coy. That does it. I’m getting on my knees and praying for help.

Stay tuned…I’ll tell you what I find…:-)
